What's the difference between the two methods?
Hand Building

This is the most basic method of forming clay. Students will use their hands, tools, and simple molds to shape clay into functional or sculptural forms at the table. Hand building allows you to work at your own pace and provides the most flexibility leading to more control and detailed design. Surface design and texture are most easily added through the hand building process.

Wheel Throwing

This method requires the most practice and upfront skill-building. Students will use the pottery wheel to create round forms often for a functional use like bowls or cups. Wheel throwing begins with centering the clay using your hands, water, and the motor of the pottery wheel. There are countless techniques to learn, practice, and master on the pottery wheel.
